The origins of Latchford Baptist Church as we know it today began not on its present site at the corner of Wash Lane and Loushers Lane but as a group of people who began worshipping firstly at the home of Joseph Wilkinson in 1849 then at a building known as the 'Old Barn Chapel' from January 1851. On 4th February 1852 a church of baptised believers was established which was the beginning of our church. Funds were raised, and on 10th July 1860 the foundation stone of the church was laid and the construction of the church started. At that time it was named Bethel Baptist Church.
Laid in the foundations are copies of church newspapers, the Warrington Guardian and coins of the time.
The first service took place on Good Friday 29th March 1861, and Rev Joseph Wilkinson was the first Pastor of the Church. The church and its people have been loyally and faithfully served by many ministers and those studying for ministry from that day to this, including for a short time in 1895-1896 a Pastor from Spirit Lake USA.
The name of the church changed to Latchford Baptist Church in 1976.
On 25th March 2008 work began to join the two separate buildings of Church and school rooms together and what we now know as " The Link" was formally opened amid much joy on Sunday 23rd November 2008.
Over the years the church has hosted celebrations for many local and national Jubilees and Anniversaries, including holding services and marking the 150th anniversary of the founding of the church in 2002.
It has changed from its original design. The front from the pulpit previously stood beneath the organ but now stands at the other end of the church behind the communion table where the entrance porch once stood. The church now has chairs instead of wooden pews, giving greater flexibility of layout for different uses, but through all the changes the church stands steadfast.
There are still descendants of the first Pastor Joseph Wilkinson and the Wilkinson family attending the church today.
